Excellent and helpfulI was assigned a role in this play for school. This study book gave me all the background I needed to play the character better. My teacher (who is director of the play at school) had all the class read the description of the plot. It helped me know what to do on stage.

Arthur Miller's Adaptation of an Enemy of the People
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (November, 1977)
Average review score:

Who owns the truthMiller's version of Ibsen's famous play sets it in language and circumstances that one can connect with better than the original - which was full of allusions to things and times which are arcane - but the original's power still remains and is enhanced by Miller. The theme comes up in the newspaper every month - a community threatened by pollution, a media crusading against power - until the power threatens to pull the plug on the media - "science" being portrayed as both the question and the answer - and friends, family and enemies in couplings and cabals to work against each other "for the common good". Read it with friends and see what it does to friendships.

As If Learning Mattered: Reforming Higher Education
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (May, 1998)
Average review score:

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Educational ReformAs a new university administrator, I found that this book provided excellent historical context for my daily work, and a useful set of concepts for reconceiving administration as a kind of educational reform. By transcending the conventional idea of the academic bureaucrat as an intellectual untouchable, someone whose caste is unclean but sadly indispensable for getting rid of those tough administrative stains, AS IF LEARNING MATTERED helped me to think of my job as a local node in a larger network of reform stretching into the past and across national boundaries. In this sense, it seems to be an invaluable resource. I hope that in the future, the author will consider extending his analysis to the connection between bureaucracy and more overt forms of activism like union organizing and international labor movements.

Assuming the Positions: Cultural Pedagogy and the Politics of Commonplace Writing (Pittsburgh Series in Composition, Literacy and Culture)

Miller resurrects the forgotten importance of commonplaceMiller looks at commonplace books as sites of identity construction and gender formation. Miller recognizes their pedagogical value as both a mneumotechnical tool as well as a vehicle for enlightenment through self-reflexivity and critical thinking. Miller suggests through this 300+ page book many interesting concepts invlovling researching outside the canon in order to locate sources of identity and cultural stimulus. Also, according to Miller, commonplace books contain important historical information. For a more detailed report email me.

Avenues of Love: An Intergenerational Activities Manual
Published in Paperback by Idyll Arbor (December, 1991)
Average review score:

CLOSING THE GENERATION GAPAvenues of Love is a superb manual on how to launch, continue, and support an intergenerational program. This important initiative grows more vital as the family life, and extended family seemingly erodes. Auenues of love is a practical guide for educators, the community minded, or anyone wishing to contribute to the marriage of old and young.
I found this work most interesting for the way it brings out the Andean worldview through the artistic artifacts remaining of those cultures. The work is also reasonably priced and up to date.
